CoalCO2-X: Networking with African stakeholders
The EU-funded LEAP programme enables long-term development partnerships between Africa and Europe, by involving multiple stakeholders from government research entities, academia, the private sector, and civil society. The programme provides a cooperation model that empowers local research and innovation, fosters the conditions for transforming research into effective innovation tailored to specific regional societal needs, capacities and aspirations in African countries.
On 8-11 October 2024, the LEAP programme held the “Stakeholder Forum of Long Europe-Africa Partnership”.
During the event, Dr Lénárd-István Csepei, coordinator of CoalCO2-X gave a presentation on Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology transfer. He introduced the CLIENT II project CoalCO2-X as a non-conventional CCU process that aims at the mineralization of CO2 and SOx captured from hard-to-abate sector emissions in South Africa. The ammonium carbonate and ammonium sulfate end products are tradable as fertilizers or as commodity inorganic chemicals. By mineralization, the CO2 potentially remains chemically bound for decades. You can find the presentation here.
In October 2025, Dr Lénárd-István Csepei attended further LEAP networking events in Brussels.
